Karevv Czubak is a young artist from Chicago, IL. He got his Bachelor’s of Fine Arts from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago in May 2024. Karevv is hoping to pursue a Master's Degree in Illustration or Art Therapy. He is currently making work about his experience with disability & mental illness, grief and recovery. Karevv‘s practice dives deep into chronic illness and the importance of looking at life with it, objectively. He wants to take out all of the fluff and focus on what is real, how painful and isolating living with chronic illness is for so many people. Karevv focuses on narratives of bodymind extension and nature as a metaphor for the body. His art has been exhibited in ACSI Art Festival, IAEA State Show, Poetry is a Place with Alessandro Ferraro, Gallerium’s Life and Death and SoloS International.
Before college, Karevv's main focus was graphite and colored pencil realism portraits. As he approached his freshman year, he focused on semi-realism, branching out to alcohol-based marker creating stylized work using bright colors and exaggerated saturation. In 2022, Karevv began to rediscover his love for colored pencil and hyperrealism creating the work he does today.
Karevv has been journaling everyday for almost a decade. A majority of his work is inspired by his experiences with chronic illness. Karevv works to show a new, real light on chronic illness and how horrible it is to suffer through it. He wants to show the vulnerable lows and what it’s like to live in that. Chronic illness is often depicted as something that you can fix by a clean diet and physical therapy, however that is often not the case. Karevv wants to get rid of the fluff and so the real issues behind chronic illness and what it takes to not only survive it but to thrive in it. Often, Karevv finds excitement in strange or unusual subject matter that pushes the boundaries of what’s reality and what’s fiction. He talks about life, death, grief and loss as well as his journey with schizophrenia and chronic illness. By working with these subjects he hopes to breathe life into them, show the real meaning behind often overlooked topics, and show what it’s like to thrive in illness.
